The term linear algebra was first used in the modern sense by van der Waerden (1870)
Linear algebra is the study of linear sets of equations and their transformation properties. Linear algebra allows the analysis of rotations in space, least squares fittings solution of coupled differential equations, determination of a circle passing through three given points, as well as many other problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering.
OR
a branch of mathematics that is concerned with mathematical structures closed under the operations of addition and scalar multiplication and that includes the theory of systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, and linear transformations
